Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young toddler. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she was not a fit. Ford later applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
